Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor become the new number one doubles team – Tennis News
Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor will share the top spot of the South African Airways ATP Doubles Rankings from now on, as they have replaced record holders, Bob and Mike Bryan, at the number one position.
The Belarusian-Canadian duo, which came together at the start of the last season, has grabbed six team titles on the ATP World Tour. They captured their first one at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships by beating Eric Butorac
and Jean-Julien Rojer in the final last year. Mirnyi and Nestor won their first Major trophy after toppling Colombian-Argentinean tandem of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Eduardo Schwank in the French Open title match. They further cemented their place at the top
by winning the Shanghai Rolex Masters and Barclays ATP World Tour finals in 2011.
Mirnyi and Nestor started 2012 from where they had left last year, as they grabbed title at the very first tournament of the season, clinching the Brisbane International. They also succeeded in defending their crown at the Regions
Morgan Keegan Championships.
Giving an interview to the media, Mirnyi said, “I was not really aware of the points count this week, but am certainly conscious of our consistency and the good work that we’ve been able to put in during the last year and a half.
Getting to the top of the rankings is a great achievement at any point and something you dream of as a professional.”
He added, “I want to use this opportunity to thank my partner Daniel Nestor for your everyday dedication and the hard work you put in on and off the court in helping me to get to the top again,”
Mirnyi and Nestor are now leading the Bryan brothers by 450 ranking points. The main reason of this change at the top is that their winning points at the Mutua Madrid Open came off one week early than last year. The twins got removed
from the number one ranking after continuously being there for the last 90 weeks. Bryans have the record for retaining the top position for the most number of weeks in the history of tennis.
