Max Mosley believes that Ferrari’s backing weakened his case
FIA’s former president Max Mosley was replaced by John Todt earlier this year and he admitted that Ferrari backed him during his resolve with the News of the World and as a result, his desire to press the budget caps was weakened.
He was quite disappointed with what Ferrari did and he believes that Ferrari owner Luca di Montezemolo does not know how difficult it is to build something from scratch as he was literally handed one of the best teams of the sport.
“My plan was to go through with [the budget cap] with the other teams, with Ferrari threatening to withdraw. The problem with Luca is he has never had to build a team from nothing and doesn't know how hard it is. F1 has a lot of problems but Luca only adds
to them,” stated the former FIA president.
However, Ferrari’s backing did not restrict Luca from attacking the team’s president who has always been critical about small teams. Di Montezemolo recently stated that the FIA should enable teams to use 3 full season drivers on the grid and added that this
would also wipe out the smaller teams in the sport.
“I would have chanced it because we all know they wouldn't really have gone. But then came the affair with the [News of the World] newspaper. Ferrari was the only team that stayed loyal, so I couldn't really do something like that to them,” he added.
It was quite a childish statement by Ferrari’s president as it is these small teams that grow and challenge the top running teams one day. If it weren’t for these “small teams”, Red bull or Renault would never have won the titles ever and even Brawn GP that
won both drivers’ and constructors’ titles in their debut season.
“The third car is complete nonsense, giving the big teams even more power, politically and sporting. It's also against the spirit of F1. It needs different blood. Without new teams, F1 would die,” said Max.
Of course no other team is supporting Ferrari about the three car team rule for 2011 but it would be interesting to see what Luca di Montezemolo has to say about Max’s statement.
