Max Mosley believes the additional seven points of Fernando Alonso are ‘illegitimate’
The former president of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), Max Mosley thinks that Fernando Alonso must not win the Drivers' Championship with seven points or less. He thinks anything less or equal to seven points’
victory would 'devalue' the 2010 championship.
The Ferrari driver currently stands at the top of the tally with his 231 points, whereas, the Red Bull driver Mark Webber chases him for second place with his 220 points. Currently, though the driver has an advantage of 11 points, yet there are only two
more races and 20 points to play for. In such a critical situation when the top four drivers stand with only a difference of 25 points from each other, it is hoped that the final Championship win would be decided by only very few points.
The season has unwrapped in a very dramatic and surprising way. The Ferrari saw a lulled back mid season and came back to the title contention only near the end of it. The German Grand Prix marked their final return to the title battle though that was the
most controversial race of the season.
The Ferrari team, like several times before, was caught for team ordering as Felipe Massa was told during the race to let Alonso overtake him. At that part of the race Massa was heading for a certain victory while Alonso was to score second place. However,
owing to the team strategy, Alonso bagged the 2nd victory of the season, while the team got a penalty of $100,000 for using forbidden team strategy of favouring one driver.
Now, as Mosley looks at the Drivers’ Championship he thinks that after following such a team strategy, if the Spanish driver would only be able to win by seven points or less, it would be a shame for FIA as well as for the championship.
As per written FIA rule, team ordering is banned and the German stewards forwarded the case to the regulatory authorities. Although the authorities did not further punish the team yet, Mosley believes that the additional seven points should have been taken
away to demonstrate more strict role of FIA.
While talking to the media earlier today he said, "That's the absolute minimum, because if by any chance Alonso were to win the Championship with a margin less than the seven points that he picked up, I would say illegitimately in Hockenheim, it would devalue
the Championship. But that's just a personal view."
