Rockstar seem to have another hit on their hands as the HD remake of the classic Max Payne game goes above Infinity Blades II and Angry Birds HD.
The portable gaming market was one that was dominated by Nintendo. Sony cut themselves a share of the market with their PlayStation Portable console and recently with their second generation portable gaming console, the PlayStation Vita.
However, while the inclusion of mobile gaming on smart phones and other devices being classified in the same bracket is debatable, the platforms such as Apple’s iPad put forward a very strong case. While the iPad may be known more for titles such as Angry Birds HD and Fruit Ninja HD, other titles such as Infinity Blade, Dead Space and more recently Max Payne Mobile are bucking that trend.
Each of those games are highly polished titles that hardcore gamers can find plenty of depth in. In fact, Dead Space on the iPad was voted the Game of the Year for the platform by numerous critics and game review sites.
It goes to show that there is a market for hardcore games when it comes to the mobile and tab gaming segment and Rockstar is the latest studio to acknowledge it.
Taking Max Payne out of its dusty confines in the shelf, the studio ported it onto the iPad and gave it a few extra layers of polish before unleashing it for the world to enjoy. The game now currently sits in third place in the iPad paid downloads chart despite being priced at $2.99.
That puts the game above the likes of Angry Birds HD, Infinity Blade II and Fruit Ninja, while at the same time only Rovio’s latest offering, Angry Birds Space HD and Zynga’s Draw Something sit above it.
Max Payne is the latest in an increasing number of examples that demonstrate that there is demand for hardcore games on mobile platforms and it is only a matter of time before other major studios take notice and who knows, maybe there might just be a few more games on the iPad that require more than a two ‘button’ control scheme.
