Max Scherzer emphatic as Detroit Tigers overcome New York Yankees 5-3 to tie ALDS – MLB Update
After an impressive end to the regular season, Max Scherzer pitched six scoreless innings to help the Detroit Tigers draw level with the New York Yankees in the American League Divisional Series, winning 5-3 in game two on Sunday, October 2 at Yankee Stadium
in New York after having lost 9-3 in game one.
Scherzer became the third pitcher in the history of post-season to pitch at least six scoreless innings at Yankee Stadium, joining Cliff Lee (2010) and Warren Spahn (1958).
"I had confidence I was going to pitch well today," Scherzer said. "I was just very relaxed and was able to slow everything down and it allowed me to pitch my game."
Freddy Garcia, on the contrary, could not live to manager Joe Girardi’s expectations. Starting for Yankees, Garcia tossed five-plus innings and gave away four runs amid six hits. His earned-run average soared to 5.06 for the season and is now unlikely to
start again in this series after losing the game.
Miguel Cabrera starred for the Tigers on the plate, driving in three runs and going 3-for-4 to become the first Tigers’ player since Kirk Gibson in Game five of the 1984 World Series to do so. Magglio Ordonez went 3-for-3 in the game to join Cabrera and
dent the Yankees’ chances in the series.
In the last eight divisional series, the result of game two has been the result of the series for the Yankees. Four times out of eight, the Yankees failed to win game two and subsequently crashed out of the ALDS and vice versa.
Cabrera unleashed a two-run homer towards right-field in the first inning to allow Ordonez a run and hence impose a two-run lead over the home side. Garcia then pitched four scoreless innings but Cabrera broke the deadlock in the sixth, driving in a run
to allow Austin Jackson a run. Victor Martinez then singled to centre-field for Don Kelly to complete a run, extending the lead to four vital runs.
Curtis Granderson homered in the eighth inning for the Yankees, but Brandon Inge scored a run from his only at-bat to regain a four-run lead for the Tigers in the ninth inning, taking the score to 5-1.
A two-run ninth inning was not enough for the Yankees to bring the game back in balance, losing 3-5 in the end.
