Max Scherzer helps Detroit Tigers crush New York Yankees, 4-0: MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers’ starter, Max Scherzer, had an outstanding day with the ball on Wednesday in the Club’s 4-0 inspiring triumph over the New York Yankees at Comerica Park, on May 4.
Scherzer completely outclassed the opposition and took out nine destructive batters in eight innings. The 26-year-old pitcher yielded just four hits and two walks to earn back-to-back win for the Club in the four-game series.
Scherzer was pleased to recuperate after April 3 when he gave away four home runs in just five innings against the same opponent, in a game that, however, Tigers managed to win by 10-7.
Scherzer said, "Two home runs there that could have easily been very different. That is baseball. That is the way it is. They hit the balls hard, and I made some mistakes that game, but I also felt like I didn't pitch badly." The right-hander further added talking about the game in which he tossed 109-pitches. "You can't back down," Scherzer said. "You've got to go right after them, and that was my mentality the whole night."
Scherzer allowed just a single to Derek Jeter in the first, and then retaliated in a great striking fashion retiring 10 straight hitters, struck out four in a row. Scherzer’s performance on Wednesday lowered his ERA to 3.15.
The Tigers opened their account in second inning when Jhonny Peralta hit a runs batted in (RBI) single. In the next inning, Miguel Cabrera added a RBI single and then Magglio Ordonez hammered a 401-feet long two-run homer, his first in this season, to take his club 4-0.
The Yankees' starter, Freddy Garcia, then pitched four more innings and did not give any hit. Overall Garcia pitched seven innings, allowed four runs on ten hits, walked two and took out eight batters to bear his second loss in season.
Garcia made an error just after he gave a homer, saying that he was up set with himself and does not blame anyone for this.
Garcia said, "I have no reason to be mad at him. I am the one throwing the ball. If I do not want to throw the pitch, I do not throw the pitch. We agreed to throw it, and bad things happened."
The Tigers’ closer, Al Alburquerque, tossed perfect last inning for his save while the Yankees closer, Buddy Carlyle too pitched scoreless inning and made two strikeouts.
