Max Scherzer helps Detroit Tigers overcome Los Angeles Angels 5-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers showed determination and fighting abilities as they outclassed the inform Los Angeles Angels 5-2 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, August 26 in the finale of their three match series.
Credit should be given to the Tigers who regrouped themselves after losing the opener. Jim Leyland and company crushed the Angels in Game 2 with a 5-3 win and they continued the good work in the finale to secure a much need win.
With their win over the Angels, Tigers also closed the gap between themselves and their rivals Chicago White Sox to just two games. Right now, Tigers are placed second on the American League Central Division standings with 69-58 record and it will be interesting
to see if they can snatch first place before the end of the season.
Starting pitcher Max Scherzer is having an impressive season and he put up another powerful show on Sunday to help the Tigers establish complete control over the contest. In his seven effective innings, Scherzer gave up just four hits and a run while striking-out
nine. Relief pitcher Jose Valverde gave up just a run in the ninth to hold off the Angels.
"It was a really good win because Miggy wasn't in the lineup," Scherzer said in a post-game interview. "Other guys stepped up and were able to produce. If we have a lineup one through nine that can produce, we're a scary team."
"Scherzer has a tremendous arm, no question about it," Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's got some deception with that delivery. He throws hard, and he builds everything off that fastball, but he's got a decent change and he can throw a breaking ball
when he needs one."
After Los Angeles took an early 1-0 lead, Andy Dirks tripled to deep right-centre in the third to put Tigers on the board. Prince Fielder and Delmon Young made the most of available opportunities in the sixth and rookie Quintin Berry hit a sacrifice fly
to centre in the eighth to lift the Tigers to a stunning victory in front of their home crowd.
