Max Scherzer helps Detroit Tigers shutout Colorado Rockies 5-0 in series decider – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers continued to show signs of improvement in their game play as they shutout Colorado Rockies 5-0 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, June 17 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski will be very happy with the way the team has responded to some difficult situations over the last week. With four wins in their last six games, the Tigers have now improved their record to 32-34
and they are just three games behind the American League Central Division leaders Chicago White Sox.
Their series win against the Rockies on Sunday was a major step in the right direction. If the Tigers can continue to give similar performances in their upcoming games, they can surely get over the .500 win percentage barrier before the All Star Break.
Doug Fister, who returned from a 15-day DH list, showed just why he is in Tigers’ pitching lineup. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer also had an excellent time on the mound to win for the sixth time this season. Showing sensational throwing abilities, he allowed
just seven hits with no walks in eight innings.
"This was extremely important for me," Scherzer said. "It was especially big to go eight, because we've got a lot of tired arms in our bullpen."
"You never think about going 5 for 5," said Quintin Berry. "It is just something that happens. I was getting a lot of pitches to hit with Austin (Jackson) on base, because no one is going to fool around with him."
"He really overmatched them, to be honest," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "He attacked the strike zone with outstanding stuff. He was throwing 97-98 (mph) with a good slider, changeup and command of the strike zone."
First baseman Prince Fielder had an RBI double to deep right centre in the third inning as the Tigers took a crucial 2-0 lead. Roman Santiago singled to centre in the third and Miguel Cabrera doubled to left in the sixth to give the Tigers complete control
over the contest, leading the score 5-0.
