Max Scherzer injury: a potential blow for Detroit Tigers – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland will be an extremely worried man these days. In the series opener against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday evening, starting pitcher left the mound after pitching only two innings. According to a leading sports website,
Scherzer had a fatigued right shoulder that forced him out of the game.
Scherzer’s injury can be a huge blow for the Tigers who are fighting hard to stay in the American League Central Division title race. Throughout this season, the starter has produced several match winning performances and surely his absence can have a significant
impact on Tigers’ results.
As Tigers try to catch the Chicago White Sox at the top of the standings table, Leyland will be expecting Scherzer to return from the Disabled List. Scherzer also went through an MRI scan. The good news for Tigers is the scan did not reveal any structural
damage.
The source further revealed that Scherzer is expected to take a couple of days off from throwing and then the injury will be re-evaluated.
In a must win game against the A’s, Scherzer gave up just a run and two hits while striking-out four batters. He was replaced by the relief pitcher Darin Downs after throwing 44 pitches. Downs grabbed his second win of the season after pitching two plus
scoreless innings. However, it was Scherzer who laid the foundations of Tigers’ win.
"I noticed it in the first inning, but I didn't have any pain in my shoulder," Scherzer said. "My arm was dead. I was able to finish the first inning. I went out for the second inning and my arm felt good, at least to start the inning. By the end of the
inning the pain in the (Coco) Crisp at-bat -- I really ran out of steam."
"I didn't have any pain in my shoulder -- it was just like my arm was dead," Scherzer said. "MRI came back negative. All the structural -- it's all good."
Scherzer has been superb for the Tigers since the start of the season. Perhaps, he is the most effective for his team after ace Justin Verlander. His 16-6 record with an incredible 3.77 ERA explains why he is an asset for the club.
