Max Scherzer looking to put things back on track – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers are heading towards arbitration in a couple of weeks time, reports a leading sports website. According to sources, the starting pitcher is seeking a $7.4 million contract but the Tigers are not prepared to offer him more
than $6 million for the next season. CBSSports.com was the first to break the story. If Scherzer failed to agree to a contract, the Tigers could a vacant position in their starting rotation.
In Dave Dombrowski’s 12 years tenure as the General Manager of Detroit Tigers, no player has ever gotten a hearing and no one is expected to get is this agent. Scherzer’s agent Scott Boras, who is considered as one of the most powerful seller in this business,
believes there was still room for negotiations between the two parties. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers decide to change their mind and offer Scherzer what he is hoping for.
"He was pitching that well," said Mario Impemba, the team's television play-by-play announcer. "I was stunned how many people didn't give Max enough credit for what he did last year. Statistics aside -- 16 wins, second in the league in strikeouts (231),
that's all great -- but to pitch knowing that his brother had passed away in the middle of the season? He pitched an entire half a year with that on his mind."
Whatever the Tigers decide to do, it is almost certain they will need an ace type of starting pitcher for the next. Pitching Coach Jeff Jones rates Scherzer very high. According to Jones, when Scherzer came to Detroit a few seasons ago, he never had the
same quality and variety in his arsenal. The Tigers certainly helped him polish his skills and become a better pitcher. In some ways, working for the Tigers has changed Scherzer’s life. He is no more an average player and a number of Major League Baseball
teams have shown interest in him since the Tigers have become reluctant to fulfil his demands.
His slider and fastball are the best in the business. Showing great temperament, fighting abilities and mental strength, the right hander helped the Tigers win several important encounters.
