Max Scherzer outpitches C. C. Sabathia as Detroit Tigers rout New York Yankees 8-1 in Game 4 ALCS
Max Scherzer put up another dominant performance as he out-dueled C. C. Sabathia to help the Detroit Tigers complete a deserving series sweep against the New York Yankees.
Scherzer used his fastballs and sliders very effectively, giving up just two hits and one run in five plus solid innings. Striking-out batters at regular intervals, he created all sorts of problems for the Yankees’ batting line-up. Overall, Tigers’ pitching
rotation gave up just six runs in four ALCS games including a four run inning by Jose Valverde in Game 1.
"I really had my changeup and my slider going," Scherzer said. "When I can combine that with my fastball, that's what makes me effective."
Down 0-3 in the series, the Yankees were under immense pressure. Scherzer kept Yankees on the defensive as he mixed up his fastballs and sliders skilfully. Scherzer will be looking to continue his excellent form on his next appearance to help the Tigers
win their first World Series title since 1984.
"Unbelievable. It's why we're here right now because our pitching," Cabrera said with a smile on his face. "Wow!"
"This team," catcher Gerald Laird, "has been battle-tested."
"You have to give a lot of credit to our pitchers," centre fielder Austin Jackson said in a post game interview. "They didn't really give them a chance. They kept going out and making great pitches and getting outs and keeping them off the bases. That definitely
gave us a chance offensively."
Nick Swisher drove in New York’s only run as he doubled to deep right centre in the sixth inning. Tigers’ offence, on the other hand, was too hot to handle.
Delmon Young produced another good performance as he put Tigers on the board with an RBI single to right in the first inning. Third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta hit back-to-back home-runs in the fourth inning to give Detroit complete control
of the situation, leading the score 6-0.
Austin Jackson and Peralta combined to hit two consecutive home-runs in the seventh and the eighth as the Tigers ended the game on a very aggressive note.
The Tigers are now headed to the World Series finals to face either the San Francisco Giants or the St. Louis Cardinals.
