Max Scherzer shines as Detroit Tigers defeat Kansas City Royals 6-3 – MLB Update
Max Scherzer threw five strong innings and Victor Martinez had three RBIs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 at Kauffman Stadium on September 21.
Now that the Detroit Tigers are in playoffs, they are looking forward to it eagerly. "I feel very good about the playoffs," said Scherzer, who pitched five innings and allowed two runs.
The Detroit Tigers have improved remarkably with poised confidence and tremendous zeal, the team has simply marched past any other rival. If nothing else, winning 25 out of 32 games is decent evidence of it.
This is something that makes Miguel Cabrera happy. "It's awesome. We came out and played hard, played 100 percent," Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera said. "It's going to be nice going home and getting ready for the playoffs."
Tigers’ Victor Martinez singled to centre to score the first run for the team in the very first inning against Felipe Paulino. But the Royals hit back with Billy Butler and Jeff Francoeur’s singles that gave them a 2-1 lead by the
end of the first inning.
Having now won 25 of their last 32 games, the Detroit Tigers seem unstoppable. "That was just what we got to do," Leyland said. "We have to get everything lined up for the playoffs, so we used our pitching like that tonight, and it
worked out fine."
Both Tim Collins and Max Scherzer pitched stronger innings afterwards, thereby successfully containing the opponent hitters. However, Billy Butler had another single to right in the sixth inning of Doug Fister to put the Royals in
charge of the game with a 3-2 lead after Victor Martinez levelled the score in the fifth.
Victor Martinez had his third RBI of the game in the seventh inning with a single to centre while Miguel Cabrera hit the tie-breaking run in the eighth. Soon after that, Don Kelly hit the two-run homer to give the Detroit Tigers a
comfortable 6-3 lead.
With the lead going to the Detroit Tigers favour, Fister came to pitch his third and the team’s eighth inning against the Kansas City Royals. In his three innings spell, Fister allowed a run and two hits.
It was Jose Valverde who came to pitch the ninth inning. Valverde tossed a perfectly unplayable inning to make it scoreless and end the game with a 6-3 win against the straining Kansas City Royals.
It will be interesting to see how the Tigers manage to carry their winning momentum into the playoffs. The team will be looking to put in a strong performance and dominate the post-season early. The Tigers are looking confident of
going the distance.
