Max Scherzer solid but Detroit Tigers lose to Los Angeles Angels 2-3 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were beaten by the Los Angeles Angels 2-3 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California on Friday, September 7 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers were hoping to get the better of the Angels in the series opener to get to the top of American League Central Division standings table but that did not turn out to be the case.
Despite taking the loss, they are just one game behind the Chicago White Sox. Their next game against Los Angeles will be of significant importance as it could give them a chance to replace the White Sox at the top of the league standings.
"We had an opportunity, and it was a terrific major league baseball game, well played by everybody," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "We had our shot. That's all you can ask for. … We've got to go win games, simple as that. You're not going to back into
anything."
Manager Jim Leyland will also be expecting his men to regroup themselves and fight back in Game 2 to keep the series alive. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer produced a magical performance as he gave up just five hits and two runs while striking-out nine batters
but the Tigers failed to score enough runs in hitting friendly conditions.
"Scherzer is tough," Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's been tough on us all year, but Ervin matched him pitch for pitch. It took a couple of relievers to do it, too, and in the ninth, we got the big hit.”
Relief pitcher Octavio Dotel took the loss after he allowed the tie breaking single in the ninth inning. For the Angels, starter Ervin Santana had a decent time on the mound as he put in a tremendous performance. However, it was closer Ernesto Frieri who
grabbed the win after he held the Tigers to just one hit in the ninth.
Tigers’ Slugger Prince Fielder and catcher Alex Avila hit back-to-back home-runs to level the score in the third but Tigers were unable to find their winning ways on Friday evening.
