Max Scherzer’s economical pitching helps Detroit Tigers nip Toronto Blue Jays, 10-5 – MLB News
Detroit Tigers’ starter, Max Scherzer, threw five solid innings as he struck out five batters in the Tigers’ 10-5 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays, on May 9, at Rogers Centre, Toronto.
Scherzer permitted two runs on five hits, with three walks. He was just a little satisfied with his performance and said, “I just really wasn't sharp today. I didn't really have command of any of my pitches. The walks kind of killed me. They ran my pitch
count up and didn't allow me to go six.”
The first three innings were silent for the Tigers. On the other side, the Blue Jays started well from the very first inning as they led off with 1-0, when Jose Bautista hit an RBI double and David Cooper scored the first run of the game. The second inning
passed away without score. In the third inning, Yunel Escobar hit a solo homer for his team and extended the lead to 2-0. It was Escobar’s third homer in the current season.
The fourth inning proved the best of the game, as the Tigers scored six runs in it. Brennan Boesch started the fourth inning in a meaningful way, as he added two runs by reaching on the loaded bases. Victor Martinez took an RBI double, Miguel Cabrera walked
and Don Kelly continued to extend the lead by posting one run and went 2-for-3. The Tigers got a 6-2 lead, at the end of fourth inning.
Scherzer felt confident with his pitching when batters gave the Tigers a big lead. While speaking of Cabrera, he said, “When he hits behind Miguel [Cabrera], that's just another quality bat right in the middle of our lineup. That just does so much for our
offense overall. The complexion of our offense is looking really good right now.”
The scorecard was unmoved until the sixth inning, when Alex Avila walked towards the loaded bases and Jhonny Peralta hit a hard shot to the shortstop position. Ramon Santiago also shined with the bat, as he hit an RBI double while Austin Jackson added one
run for the team. Martinez hit a one-run homer against the Jays’ reliever, Octavio Dotel, to further extend the lead 10-2 in the seventh inning.
Tiger’s Manager, Jim Leyland, said of Martinez, “[Martinez] got some awful big hits for us in this series, one right after another.”
No score was added to the scoreboard from the fourth to eighth inning for the Blue Jays. In the ninth inning, Blue Jays cut-off their deficit to 10-5, by scoring three runs. Ryan Perry walked, while Corey Patterson scored two runs for the Jays. Edwin Encarnacion
took an RBI single in the ninth inning’s three-run campaign.
