Maxi Rodriguez claims positive start key to Liverpool’s European ambition – EPL News
Liverpool midfielder Maxi Rodriguez believes that the Reds will have to produce positive results in the opening fixtures of the ongoing 2011/12 Barclays Premier League campaign in order to earn UEFA Champions League 2012/13 qualification at the end of the
season.
Liverpool, who have won the Premier League title 18 times, are aiming to finish in the top four of the Barclays Premier League standings this season after failing to qualify for the elite competition in the past two seasons.
The Merseyside club have been very active in the current summer transfer window. Under the management of legendary boss Kenny Dalglish, the Reds are being widely tipped to challenge for the premier league title this season.
Rodriquez believes that Liverpool will have to produce positive results in their opening couple of fixtures if they want to finish in the top four of the league.
The Argentinean midfielder stated, "I don't think you can stress enough the importance of the first few weeks of the season.”
The 30-year-old believes that a club’s better position in the league standings provide confidence to their players and management and also mounts added pressure on the opposition.
"If you can see yourself near the top of the table it's great and the confidence that gives helps you grow as a team and as a squad,” the midfielder added.
The Argentine has revealed that Liverpool’s ultimate dream is to win the Barclays Premier League title and believes that if the Reds keep on giving positive performances throughout the season then they will easily manage to finish in the top four of the
standings.
Rodriquez asserted, "I think at the start of any season your ultimate goal is to win the league and to come out as champions. If you can aim to achieve that then by the very fact that you are fighting for the title it will almost guarantee that you will
be involved in the Champions League the following season.”
The former Atletico Madrid player believes that Liverpool have enough quality and strength to fight for the title this season.
"A team like Liverpool has to be battling on that level and have those kind of aspirations for the season," Maxi Rodriquez concluded.
