Maxim Iglinskiy wins the Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2012
Maxim Iglinskiy stole the show with his superb performance during the second race of the Ardennes Classics, Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
He finished the 257.5 kilometre event in a fastest time of 6 hours, 43 minutes and 52 seconds and registered his first win of the season.
The Kazakh road brilliantly and restricted the race’s favourite Vincenzo Nibali behind his wheel.
Nibali launched several attacks to overcome Team Astana cyclist but had to settle for the second overall position.
Vincenzo was leading the race in final 15 kilometres and gained a healthy lead of 22 seconds over Rodriguez and Iglinskiy.
He was well placed and extended his lead to 39 seconds in the last 10 kilometres of the Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2012.
Iglinskiy launched his final attack at the last climb of Cote de Saint Nicolas and had enough to drop Rodriguez and Gilbert behind him.
Maxim’s superb attack placed him right behind the back wheel of the exhausted Vincenzo.
Iglinskiy was over the moon after registering the biggest win of his career and is optimistic to build up on his current form for the later part of the year.
He briefed after crossing the finish line, "When I went for it, chasing after Nibali, I thought I had no chance of victory. I thought I was fighting for second".
"But then I managed to catch him, saw he wasn't in a good place, and went for it straight away. It's the biggest win of my career by a long way".
"Although I had taken stages in hilly races like the Dauphine Libere in 2007 and the Tour of Romandie in 2008 - as well as the Strade Bianche in 2010”.
“I thought I could do better in cobbled Classics like Ghent-Welvegem and E3 Harelbeke", he concluded.
Iglinskiy started his professional pursuit with Team Capec back in the 2004 and has represented a lot of other sides during his extensive career.
He was a strong part of Team Domina Vacanze (2005), Team Milram (2006) before joining Team Astana in the 2007 season.
Maxim has helped the team with numerous victories in the past season and is optimistic to build up on his current form for the coming races of the season.
