Maxime Authom battles past Thomas Schoorel into quarterfinal – TEAN International 2011 CH
World number 298 Maxime Authom of Belgium made the biggest upset of the tournament so far as he defeated second seed Thomas Schoorel of the Netherlands in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the round of 16 at the TEAN International Tennis
Tournament in Alphen, Netherlands on Friday. The match lasted for an hour and 36 minutes.
Authom and the Dutch won their serve in the first five games to take the score to 3-2 in favour of the later. Schoorel broke the Belgian in the sixth game and consolidated on it to grab a 5-2 lead. The Dutch served out the set
in the ninth game, capturing it 6-3. Schoorel served very well as he bombarded six aces and grabbed sixteen of the twenty points on the first serve in the opening set. The Dutch could win just one of the seven first return points but managed to claim the only
break point he received on Authom’s serve in the first set.
Schoorel and the Belgian put on a serving display in the first ten games of the second set as they convincingly held their serve, squaring off the score at 5-5. The Belgian claimed the breakthrough in the eleventh game, breaking
Schoorel to go up 6-5 and serving out the set in the next game, winning it 7-5. The 24-year-old fired seven aces and won a whopping seventeen of the twenty first service points in the second set.
After levelling the score at one set apiece, Authom came roaring into the third set. The Belgian was almost flawless as he dropped only a single game in the entire set. The 298th ranked broke the Dutch in the fourth
and sixth game and won all of his service games to bag the set 6-1. Authom delivered three aces and 57 percent f the first serves, capturing ten of the twelve first service points and six of the nine second service points in the final set. The Belgian sealed
ten of the seventeen total return points and converted two of the four break points he received on Schoorel’s serve in the deciding set.
Authom will take on either Augustin Gensse or James Mcgee in the quarterfinals.
