Maxime Authom slays Peter Polansky in final qualifying round – US Open 2012
Belgian contender, Maxime Authom, devastated the Canadian challenger, Peter Polansky, with a bagel at the US Open 2012 on Friday. He registered a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the Canadian to cruise into the main draw at this final Grand Slam event of the season
taking place in Queens in New York City, United States.
Authom unveiled his true form to bag the opening eight games, eventually crushing the Canadian in one hour and five minutes. After earning this success, the Belgian comfortably secured a spot in the opening round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis
Center.
The 25-year-old went berserk after entering this major hard court event. He blasted massive forehands and backhands to reel off all six games. Authom never faced any barriers and cashed in three out of four break opportunities to pull out the opener with
a bagel.
Ranked 192nd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Authom carried his momentum in the proceeding set. He got the coveted break in the opening game and leaped to a 2-0 lead. Despite squandering
his edge in the fourth game, the Belgian remained on the right track and wiped out the last four games to click the set with a 6-2 win. He amazingly blocked five out of six breakpoints he faced and converted three out of four break chances to his advantage.
Summing up the Belgian’s performance, Authom manifested a higher first serve share of 63 per cent as opposed to his opponent’s 55 per cent and brilliantly availed 22 out of 30 points on it. He also hammered four winners and finished the match with 58 points.
Authom’s will next face the German star, Bjorn Phau, in the first round.
The Taiwanese contender, Jimmy Wang, will join Authom in the main draw. He bounced back to outrun the Romanian challenger, Marius Copil, in a three set thriller to progress. He lost his serve once but capitalise on three out of nine break opportunities to
formulate a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(3) score line. He also withstood 16 aces and finished the match with 110 points.
