Maxime Huscenot and Julian Wilson prevail in Round 2 of Mr. Price Pro Ballito
The surfing action continued at the Surfers Beach in Ballito, South Africa, with the seventh and eighth heat of Mr. Price Pro Ballito’s Round of 48 (Round 2) on Wednesday, July 6th.
France’s Maxime Huscenot once again made his good form apparent with his impressive performance during the seventh heat to clinch victory. South Africa’s Brendon Gibbens got through to the next round as well after locking runner-up place. Australia’s Stu
Kennedy and Adam Robertson were eliminated from the competition after rounding out the third and fourth positions respectively.
The eighth heat was dominated by Australia’s Julian Wilson, while his compatriot Blake Thornton joined him in the Round of 24 (Round 3) by securing the runner-up position. South Africa’s Beyrick De Vries and French Polynesia’s Alain Riou finished in third
and fourth position respectively, consequently getting removed from the contention for event title.
During the seventh heat, all the surfers struggled to adjust to the massive swells. The Frenchman, Huscenot locked a wave to score 5.50 points off it and take the lead. With a 5.87-point second wave, he finished with a heat-total of 11.37 points.
Gibbens used his local knowledge of the waves to survive the heat by clinching second place. Scoring 5.00 off his first wave and 4.10 off his second, he finished with a heat-total of 9.10 points.
The heat turned out to be really disappointing for the Australian fans as both Kennedy and Robertson were eliminated after rounding out the bottom-two positions. Kennedy finished with a heat-total of 7.83 points, while his compatriot merely scored 2.33 in
total off his two best waves.
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World No. 30, Wilson, remained the highlight of the next heat. He went to work quite early in the heat, earning an impressive 7.83 off his first wave and immediately following it up with a 6.33-point wave, to get
to a heat-total of 14.16 points. The score proved too much for his rivals to beat, forcing them to surrender victory.
“Right before my heat I saw some waves peeling a little deeper so I went out early to make sure I could paddle all the way down to the inside and it worked out,” Wilson said while talking to a reporter after the head. “It’s so fun having a lot of swell,
there’s no hassling and its kind of victory at sea out there.”
Thorson managed stay alive in the event after earning 4.17 and 4.20 points off his two best waves, to finish with a heat-wave total of 8.37 points.
Vries and Riou finished with a heat-total of 7.60 and 7.00 points respectively, consequently getting ousted from the competition.
