Maximilian Kieffer scores a course-record 63 at the Kunetická Hora Golf Club
Maximilian Kieffer fired a course-record nine-under par 63 at the Kunetická Hora Golf Club, to surge into contention for the top position, entering the last two rounds of the inaugural D+D Real Czech Challenge Open.
Having teed off on the 10th hole, he recorded a 33 on the back nine of the course, thanks to the opening-hole birdie and a sparkling eagle on the 16th hole.
The front nine of the course witnessed him play some better shots, as the German managed to add a total of six shots to his scorecard afterwards.
He opened up with a couple of birdies on the first and the second hole. After recording pars on each of the next three holes, he finished his round with a run of four straight birdies.
At the end of the day, he found himself taking the sole fourth position on the leaderboard, only two strokes behind the leader Andreas Hartø.
“That was probably one of the best rounds I have ever played,” said the 22-year-old. “I played really well from tee to green and I had a lot of shots that were right on line with the pin so I had a birdie chance at almost every hole and my putting was good
too”.
He added, “In the first round I had a really bad start. I was two over after 12 holes and I was a bit upset but then I had a good finish – eagle, par, birdie – so even though I was only one under I had a really positive feeling after that round”.
After winning the Challenge Tour’s curtain raiser Gujarat Kensville Challenge, the 22-year-old has not been able to reach the top in any of the tournaments that he played.
However, he has been consistent throughout the 2012 season and currently holds the 27th spot in the European Challenge Tour Rankings.
A strong finish this week can rank him among the top-20 players in the standings, which will eventually allow him to play his rookie season on the European Tour next year.
The top-20 players in the list will earn automatic exemptions to play on the European Tour in the next season.
