Maximo Gonzalez enters final four by beating Andrey Kuznetsov - Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Argentinean Maximo Gonzalez gave a resounding statement on November 18, 2011 when he defeated Russian Andrey Kuznetsov in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Uruguay Open. Gonzalez won the match 7-6(2), 6-2.
The Argentinean was a bit shaky in the opening set of the match but he improved his performance as the match progressed. Gonzalez won points with two aces and conceded a double fault once. Kuznetsov could only deliver a single ace but had to face the burden of double faults twice into the set.
Gonzalez, the world number 130th player, had a 59% first serve winning rate while Kuznetsov could secure a 63% winning ratio. The Russian, ranked at the number 242nd spot in the world, won 67% points from his first serve and 36% points from his second. Kuznetsov could not utilize his second serve in winning points but his good start in the first set helped him retain a steady position.
The Argentine, on the other hand, won 58% points from his first serve and 61% points from his second. Gonzalez could only save one of his breakpoints out of the three he faced while Kuznetsov was unable to save any of the two breakpoints he faced. The Argentine increased his second serve points, which was why the first set could not determine a winner and entered into a tiebreaker. Gonzalez prevailed in the first set as he won it 7-6(2).
With the match entering into the second set, neither of the two players could score an ace. Gonzalez was showing some decent pace, as he did not concede any breakpoint. He had a first serve winning ratio of 77% while Kuznetsov could secure a rate of 41%. 28-year old Gonzalez won 71% points from his first serve and 40% points from his second. On the other hand, 20-year old Kuznetsov could win 55% points from his first serve and 38% from his second.
In the second set, neither of the two players could save all of the breakpoints that they faced. Gonzalez could save three out of the four breakpoint chances he faced while Kuznetsov could only save a single breakpoint out of the four chances he got. The Argentinean led the second set with dominance as he won it 6-2 and became the semi finalist of the 2011 Uruguay Open.
