Maximo Gonzalez pounds Caio Zampieri to book a place in round two - Bucaramanga Challenger 2012
World number 124, Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina, easily dumped the Brazilian competitor, Caio Zampieri, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to book a place in the second round of the Bucaramanga Challenger.
A small crowd turned up at the arena; probably people were staying back to their homes watching the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open.
It was a completely one-sided show, with the Argentine dominating for most of the time and hardly committing any unforced errors. Brazilian had a pretty dismal run of form in the recent past with just four victories in the last
nine encounters. It was obvious that only a complete turnaround in his luck and performance can do the wonders against the prolific Argentine tennis ace.
Gonzalez leads the head-to-head scores with 4-0 after a terrific performance in this match and alarms his upcoming rivals. The Brazilian placed a good fight but only to make sure that he saved his own serve games. He broke serve
in the second game to accomplish the goal of having an initial breakthrough that gave him the initial 2-0 lead.
No more breaks were witnessed in the set and despite the hard struggle from the Brazilian to earn the break back he couldn’t register the crucial breakthrough that could have levelled the scores. It was good to see that the Brazilian
was not gifting games to the Argentine but he was less skilled than his superior ranked rival.
Second set started slowly but picked up momentum as the games progressed. Both players held their serves to make sure that no one got the initial advantage to capitalize. In the fifth game of the set, Zampieri committed a double
fault that was followed up with a breathtaking winner across the court by the Argentine.
The Brazilian curtailed the trail in that game but just after the first deuce, he couldn’t stop his opponent from pocketing the vital game. It was such a vital breakthrough that turned the tables on the Brazilian and he lost heart
and surrendered at that moment.
Gonzalez pounded on his opponent afterwards and broke serve once again in the ninth game to confirm a spot in the second round of the tournament. This result was well deserved by the fifth seed Argentine who had led the proceedings
right from the start.
