Question:

Maximum memory and taking out old memory?

This is what Crucial (An awesome memory selling site according to reviews) says about the memory I need.

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=VAIO%20VGC-RB40%20Series

It says the maximum memory is around 2GB. I have 512MB memory right now and plan to get a 2x1GB set because the price is more efficient then getting a 2x512MB set. If I install the 2 1GBs, should I take out the old 512 so it won't go over the maximum memory that Crucial said exists? And is taking out RAM any harder then installing it?

  1. Most likely, you'll need to remove the old memory.  The Crucial diagnostics should state whether this is necessary.

By the way, there are two clips on either side.  You'll wonder why you were apprehensive.  :)

  2. Also, if the old memory is a slower speed than the new, the new will be reduced to the slower speed, if the old is left in.
