The ATP Ranking is based on calculating, for each player, his total points from the 13 main events - the four Grand Slams and the nine ATP Masters Series tournaments - and his best five results from all eligible International Series tournaments from the past 52 weeks. The Tennis Masters Cup counts as an additional 19th tournament for players who qualify for the circuit finale.

Grand Slam, a winner get 1000 points x 4  = 4000 pts

ATP Masters Series, a winner get 500 pts x 9 = 4500 pts

International Series, winner get 300 pts x 5 = 1500

A winner at ATP Masters Cup get 750 pts (unbeaten in all match)

Therefore a total of points he can achieve is 10,750 pts.

Roger Federer has won 8,370 in 2006, the highest number of ranking points so far.

Players count the number of points from the 13 mandatory tournaments, ie, the Masters Series and the Slams, plus up to 5 other tournaments, and the Masters Cup if they qualify, for a total of 19 tournaments. Of course, lower ranked players who don't participate in Grand Slams, etc, can count other tournaments, but this is not the case.

Should he win all of them, the maximum number of points is as follows:

1000 x 4 = 4000 (Grand Slams)

500 x 9 = 4500 (Masters Series)

300 x 3 = 900 (ISG Rotterdam, Barca, Dubai)

250 x 2 = 500 (ISG others)

For a total of 19 tournaments and 10650 points.

Note that the points system is changing next year, though, and Roger Federer has the highest points ever at 8370 points at the end of 2006. Theoretically, the maximum should be 10750, but since there are only three ISG tournaments that give 300 points, the other two give only 250 points.
