My new Maxtor OneTouch 500gb external USB worked fine for about a month. One day--and ever since--I went to disconnect it using "safely remove hardware" as I always do, and I got an "$mft" error accompanied by a "delayed write failure" notification. Looking in event viewer, I saw Event ID 50 (delayed write failed), which indicates the data was lost because Windows was unable to save all the data. This was accompanied by Event ID 51 (error detected on harddisk during paging operation), and Event ID 57 (system failed to flush data to transaction log, corruption may occur). Seagate somewhat addresses the $mft/delayed write failure issue with no real solution. I've also run Seagate Tools and everything passes. The external seems to be working fine, I'm still able to load all my files, which is primarily music, and the files are fine (although I know I'm probably playing with fire by continuing to use it until this is resolved). But every time I go to disconnect the external now, the same thing happens, along with the message that says "generic volume cannot be stopped; try again later," because "some other program is accessing it right now." But then, if I shut down the computer and reboot it, it lets me disconnect the external using "remove hardware safely." The external came with a six-pin firewire, and my computer has a four-pin port. So I haven't tried that or a different USB cable yet. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.
