Maxtor hardrive installs but gets recognised as a...

Last night my hardrive did not appear in my computer but instead recognised it as new hardware and asked me to install it. I folowed the onscreen instructions and it said it was installed successfully. however when i went to my computer it was shown as local disk f??? what is the problem?
