Maxym Shemberyev and Mie Nielsen dominate on final day – European Long Course Junior Championships
Final day of the 2011 European Long Course Junior Championships ended with the remarkable performances of Maxym Shemberyev and Mie Nielsen in Belgrade, Serbia, on Sunday, July 10.
Maxym Shemberyev of Ukraine secured the gold medal in the Men’s 400m Individual Medley, while Mie Nielsen of Denmark won the Women’s 100m back-stroke meet. Siobhan-Marie O'Connor of Great Britain took home the Women’s 200m IM title, whereas, Anna Sztankovics
nabbed the Women’s 100m breast-stroke crown. Aitor Martinez Rodriguez of Spain captured the Men’s 50m freestyle race. Louise Hansson of Sweden won the Women’s 50m freestyle meet.
Initially, Shemberyev snagged the Men’s 400m IM title with a winning time of 4 minutes and 16.94 seconds. Earlier, Gergo Kis posted the fastest time of 4 minutes and 16.82 seconds in the 400m IM, in 2006. Eduardo Solaeche Gomez of Spain earned the silver
title in 4 minutes and 20.36 seconds. Dan Wallace grabbed the bronze medal in 4 minutes and 20.60 seconds.
Mie Nielsen nabbed the Women’s 100m back-stroke race with a sterling time of 1 minute and 02.50 seconds, whereas, Christian Scheruebl of Austria secured victory in the Men’s 200m freestyle in 1 minute and 49.51 seconds.
O'Connor captured the Women’s 200m IM title in 2 minutes and 14.71 seconds, while Velimir Stjepanovic of Serbia grabbed the Men’s 100m butterfly meet in 53.79 seconds.
Ann Sztankovics secured the gold medal in the Women’s 100m breast-stroke in 1 minute and 09.31 seconds, whereas, Panagiotis Samilidis of Greece clinched the Men’s 100m breast-stroke title in 1 minute and 01.13 seconds.
Aitor Martinez Rodriguez topped the Men's 50m freestyle in 22.64 seconds, while Louise Hansson hit the finishing wall in 27.04 seconds to win the Women’s 50m butterfly meet.
Additionally, the group of French swimmers including Gheorghiu, Touatl, Van Adringa and Verger Gourson took home the Women's 800m free relay crown with a winning time of 8 minutes and 07.63 seconds. The Italian swimmers’ group including Bonacchi, Lucatello,
Parisi and Ferri secured victory in the Men’s 400m medley relay in 3 minutes and 42.01 seconds.
