When you're doin a logo for a company, it's usually a good idea to research that company and see what exactly it is that they do. Focus on their main produce and interests, colors of their website/business materials. Find out how they got started and how they've branched out. When you do that, you get a better idea of what kind of logo you shuold do. Whether to make it simple, or complicated, etc etc. And when you are coming up with ideas to show the client remember to give them 3 choices to choose from. Good luck!

the key to good logo design is simplicity,

never over  embellish your logo. remember, the most recognizable logos are also the most iconic. Coke, IBM, UPS, Apple etc....

One of my mentors told me that you ought to be able to fax your logo with little or no loss of clarity.
