  1. This expression is odd. When this is asked it is almost as if these answers are expected:

    No, you can't have your cake but you can eat it.

    Or:

    Yes, you can have your cake but you can't eat it.

  5. HI EL.  When you use the word MAY.. you are asking permission to have your cake and eat it.   So someone might say since the cake already belongs to you.... No..  not now because dinner is almost ready.  

    When you use the word CAN (which is the word most normally used) -  you are asking if it is possible to have your cake and eat it.  In that case, the answer might be....   Well, you have a mouth, teeth and can swallow... so, yes, I think it is physically possible.  

    This is the way that I perceive the question.
