May I have some advice about something stupid I did?

I feel so stupid for something I did at work....

This woman came in and started ranting and raving about some kittens (I work in a pet store) that we have, saying they're too young, they should be bottle fed, etc... The woman had three friends with her and they were all in agreement, and she said that she's complained to my manager often and that she was going to call head office etc etc.

I have to admit, the one kitten she was particuarly ranting about WAS very small, and probably needed to be bottle fed.

Other customers in the store were listening to this woman and whispering to each other, and I even heard one of them say "wow, that kitten is way too young!"

It was so embarrassing, and I kinda panicked. I let the lady take the kitten home (she bought cat milk) overnight to feed it.

She hasn't brought it back, and now the manager and the lady who brought in the kittens (she rescues them) are super pissed and I feel so terrible, I can't even describe.

If I had to do it over again, I would do so many things differently, but I cannot change what happened.

All I could think of at the time was that the other people in the store were all going to think that we didn't care for the animals properly, which is not true, but this lady was insisting that we were a "filthy" place.

My manager called me and talked to me for an hour today, and told me that what's done is done, live & learn, etc, but I regret this so much.

I just hope the lady brings the kitten back. I don't feel like she would hurt it or anything, but it the woman who brings in the kittens is so mad and wants to send the police after her (even though we don't have her real name).

Please, I need some advice.

What would you do in my situation?

Thanks for reading this.

  1. You're stressing about this way too much.  She was also trippin' too hard over something little.  You know it's a problem in many cities of people not spaying and neutering their pets?  They put-down thousands of stray pets a month in animal shelters.  One poor little kitten not being fed correctly is a drop in the bucket.  I'm sure thousands of kittens die for whatever reason in cities, in homes, or out in the wild.  It's simply not mother nature's intention for every single organism to survive.  Some genes are fit; some are not.  Even the most humanitarian human being cannot fight against nature.

  2. If your mgr says it'sover, you're all good. I wonder if the lady who brings them in gets a profit? If so, then it's about the money, and she is a selfish child. Besides, she shouldn't have brought them in if they were too young, and your mgr shouldn't have accepted the non weened kittens, or, at least not displayed them. In a situation like this, I would've contacted my mgr on the spot, but alas, hindsight is 20/20. If guilt is eating at you this bad, then perhaps offer to pay the lady for the loss if not returned, police action could reflect bad on the store in trems of animal rights, and so on. If you offer to pay, and she refuses, then all you can do is hope she gets hit by a bus on the way home. Good luck!

  3. if that is the biggest problem in your life, you are living GOOD!
