Question:

May sompopos anyone?

Anyone know more information about the may sompopos? all i know is that they come out during the first rainy days of may. i also heard that their delicious, anything will really help. thanks alot

  1. It's a sort of insect.  Kind of reminds me of cicadas, though they are smaller.   I haven't tasted them, some  people toast them and splash some lime.  They say they have a nutty flavor.


  2. Sompopos or Zompopos de Mayo.  These are large ants that come out of the soil in may, when our rainy season starts in May, obviously. Rainy season is winter to us.

    Zompopos don´t do much, they just walk around and eat plants. Then they disappear. I´m guessing that they come out of their holes for mating season or something. Sorry, I like them but I don´t know anything else about them.

    Does anyone actually eat them????

  3. Did you mean maypops?

    also known as maycocks, a yellow edible fruit...

    If so, look for vines with purple and white flowers, and 3-lobed leaves. If you find them while they're blooming you will know where they are when you want to pick the fruit.
