  1. If you live in the USA there is little privacy in much unfortunately.

No question is stupid.  However, if you are in danger ? and that is why you are concerned about people knowing about where you are working ? please take care of yourself.

  2. I can be found out almost immediately, depending on how the background check is done

If someone "on the ground" goes out and interviews people you know, they will ask questions like this, and of course, your acquaintances that have knowledge with give the information up.

That being said, other ways would be say, a credit reporting agency that has updated it's information on you, say by a credit application that you've submitted, or a collections call in which you've done their job for them and provided the information on your current address, employment, etc.

Other ways may take longer.  As your employer with holds taxes, they will report your social security number.  Many businesses do this on a monthly or quarterly basis.

There is little privacy anymore, and the privacy act is easily violated.  (Usually by the Patriot act.)
