Maya Moore leads as Minnesota Lynx rout Connecticut Sun, 90-67 – WNBA Recap
On Saturday night, rookie Maya Moore went ballistic as the Minnesota Lynx romped to a 90-67 win over Connecticut Sun.
Moore, who was drafted in at number one this year, had her best game of the season. The 22-year-old forward hammered a season-high 26 points, on a 9 for 14 shooting from the field including 6 of 9 three-pointers, three assists
and two rebounds.
Moore said after the game. "This was a game where I just wanted to make sure I was mentally prepared. I felt good in warm-ups and practice leading up to the game. I'm just happy with the results."
Seimone Augustus scored 20 points, shooting 8 for 15 from the field, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists in Minnesota’s second consecutive victory. Rebekkah Brunson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10
rebounds while Taj McWilliams-Franklin also pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory.
With this victory, Lynx tied their best 10-game start in the history of the franchise. In addition to that, they have now pulled into a tie with San Antonio Silver Stars for first position in the Western Conference, holding a 7-3
record so far in the season.
Connecticut, on the other hand, saw their two-game winning streak halted. However, they are still second in the Eastern Conference with a 6-4 record. Renee Montgomery led the Sun with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. Asjha
Jones added 13 points and four rebounds while Kelsey Griffin came off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds for Connecticut, who have lost three of their previous five games.
Lynx shot 48.6 percent (36 for 74) from the field, 50 percent (10 for 20) from three-point range and 80.0 percent from free throw line (8 for 10). Connecticut, on the other hand struggled with their shooting, finishing with 34.6
percent (27 for 78) from the field, 31.6 percent (6 for 19) from three-point range and a 100 percent from the foul line (7 for 7).
Augustus and Lindsay Whalen scored six points each in the opening period as Minnesota led by four, 27-23, after the first quarter. In a closely contested second quarter, Minnesota held a 42-38 lead with 03:20 to go in the quarter.
Sun made a surge at that point as Greene’s driving lay-up at 02:46 mark in the second period and Lawson’s three-pointer in the next possession put them ahead by 43-42. However, Augustus responded with a lay-up and gave Lynx a point
lead, 44-43, at halftime.
In the third quarter, Minnesota seized control of the contest and outscored the Sun 23-6 to take a 67-49 lead into the fourth frame. Lynx maintained the double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter and romped to their fourth
home win of the season.
