Maybank Malaysian Open concludes with Louis Oosthuizen on top: Wrap up Part-1
Many have thought that after two consecutive near-misses in his last two starts, Louis Oosthuizen may not be the force to reckon with in last week’s Maybank Malaysian Open and will succumb to travelling fatigue in the star-studded event.
The 29-year-old proved them all wrong after a phenomenal victory at the event, edging past the rest of the contenders by three shots.
Oosthuizen finished for a joint third in Houston about two weeks ago and suffered a disastrous loss at the Masters, where he finished for an outright runner-up.
However, he finally went over to end his winless spree at the scenic Kuala Lumpur Golf Club last week.
Oosthuizen’s victory in Malaysia is a mammoth achievement not only in the sense that he was continuously haunted by the painful memories of the Masters at Augusta National but he had also travelled some 10,000 miles and no fewer than 12 time zones to land in Malaysia.
Marred by the fatiguing travel schedule, Kuala Lumpur GC was hit by rain and thunderstorms on Friday and again on Saturday, forcing Oosthuizen to abandon his third round well before time.
The South African started off his final round with remaining eight holes from the third day and had to play some 26 holes on the final day.
He said, "I thought I was going to be a lot more tired. It was a long journey to get here and I have to be honest and say that I didn't expect to play this well because of the tiredness".
"The one thing I did know was that the game was there so that helped a lot. I was pretty tired at points in those first couple of rounds but overall it has been great and I am over the moon with the result. It was just a question of whether or not I would be able to go all the way physically".
The rampaging South African finished the back nine of his third round with two birdies with regular intervals and started off with his final 18-holes from the front.
He pulled in a birdie at the third hole of the front and another on the fifth.
