Maybank to spend RM 41 million to elevate the level of Badminton in Malaysia – Badminton News
The declining standard of badminton in Malaysia has gained a timely boost as Maybank will sponsor RM 41 million to elevate the level of the game in the country. This deal has been signed for a period of six years and the Badminton Association of Malaysia
(BAM) will work on the development of the game throughout the country.
Maybank has become the official sponsor for BAM by taking over the rights from Proton, which will also spend RM 10 million over a period of five years. Now, the focus of BAM will be on grooming back-up players and introducing development programmes for junior
shuttlers by providing them with the latest training facilities.
While talking about the new sponsorship of Maybank, Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, president of BAM said, “Maybank’s presence will certainly elevate the game to a higher ground. More importantly, we will be able to mobilise our development efforts in states.”
BAM will work from the grass root level to produce more and more world-class shuttlers to fill the gap which is haunting the image of the country in badminton. Currently, Chong Wei, the World Number One, is the only shuttler who is working hard to compete
at the international stage. Besides Chong Wei, there is no player in the Men’s Singles category who possesses the ability to replace the top seed in near future.
However, the huge sponsorship from Maybank will help BAM in raising the standard of the game by working on different training plans.
Abdul Wahid Omar, chief operating officer of Maybank said, “Let me assure you that we are here not to run the BAM. We are attracted to badminton as it has mass popularity. It is a strong sports brand that puts Malaysia on the world map as among the best
in the game.”
The huge financial assistance of Maybank is expected to bring positive change in the development of badminton in Malaysia. If everything works in the right direction, the current deficiency of top-class shuttlers in the country will be eliminated soon.
