Maybank whitewashes University Kuala Lumpur in 2011 MHL Quarter-Final
The knockout stage of the 2011 TNB Malaysian Hockey League (MHL) began with Maybank marking five goals to wipe out University Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), 5-0, on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia.
Maybank proved that its squad should not to be taken lightly by claiming an impressive victory and qualifying for the semi-final stage of the league.
Both teams commenced the game at quite a frantic pace, rigorously exchanging attack while seeking to score the first goal.
Three minutes into the match, Muhamad Ramadhan Rosli (UniKL) drove the ball into the deep circle, aiming to score the first goal but to no avail.
Maybank’s goalie, Mohd Hanafi Hassan, brilliantly tackled the shot and stopped the opponents from taking the lead.
In a counter-offence, Maybank continued with back-to-back attacks, only to earn its first short corner in the ninth minute of the game.
Mohd Zulhairi Hashim did not disappoint his team and sent a fantastic drag flick into the goal, putting Maybank ahead by 1-0.
The pace of the game slowed down as both sides adopted a cautious style of play. UniKL wanted to level the score while the contenders strove to maintain their lead.
In an unexpected turn of events, the umpire surprised everyone by awarding and then promptly reversing a penalty stroke to UniKL.
The players of both the teams along with the onlookers were shocked once again when the referee awarded a penalty stroke to Maybank.
Suhaimi Ibrahim’s shot struck Fitri when he was attempting to play a reverse shot, giving away a penalty stroke to Maybank.
Engku Abdul Malek Engku Mohamad of Maybank took the shot brilliantly and doubled the tally right before the half-time whistle.
Hafifihafiz Hanafi took the puck on a breakaway, unassisted, and availed an opportunity in less than nine minutes into the second half to put Maybank ahead of UniKL by 3 goals.
The Maybank defenders showed magnificent performance and blocked plenty of attacks from UniKL.
Zulhairi and Hafifihafiz accounted for one goal apiece in the 56th and 69th minute, respectively, to seal the victory for Maybank at 5-0.
