Maybin arrives early, hoping to gain from practice
Gareth Maybin has played in every event of the European Tour, as he earned his full playing privileges in the year 2009. Unfortunately for Maybin, he still has no wins.
For Maybin, playing in the Irish Open is much more important than playing in the Open Championship.
Just to get some extra practice for the Irish Open and to be ready for the Royal Portrush, the Northern Irishman did not participate in the final qualifying event of the Championship at Sunningdale.
In an interview, Maybin said, “Playing the Irish Open at Royal Portrush is may be a once in a lifetime experience, although I hope it's not”.
The event being held in Northern Ireland made it the number one priority for Maybin. This made him come to the course and practice before the tournament.
“The build-up and the excitement for it has been amazing and even though I'm away on tour most of the time, just talking to my family and friends and seeing what a massive deal they are making of it, fills you with a sense of real anticipation”.
Maybin original plans included participating in the last week's BMW Championship in Cologne. Eventually he decided to miss the event at Sunningdale.
The Irishman’s main goal is to play in the majors but the Northern Ireland event is just too important for him right now. That is all he could concentrate on.
With so much going on at Sunningdale, Maybin had the whole course practically to himself, with substantial time to practice and rest.
Everything seems very calm at the Dunluce course but the 31-year-old thinks that these weather conditions are not going to last for long. The weather will have a great effect on the outcome of the game.
Regarding his game, Maybin said, “We're getting a good look at how it is set up for the tournament and picking out a few lines and developing a game plan”.
Despite all the practice and all the time to rest, Maybin still thinks that he is not a safe bet for the Irish Open and would not be able to secure a position in the high-profile tournament.
