Mayer/Melzer outclass Fyrstenberg/Matkowski to reach the quarter-final – Monte Carlo Masters 2012
German-Austrian duo of Florian Mayer and Jurgen Melzer stunned the fourth seed Polish team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the second round of the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters on Thursday. The unseeded combination of
Mayer and Melzer took just 69 minutes of play to oust their opponents in twin sets, 6-4, 6-4, marching into the doubles quarter-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event.
The exciting contest was played on the clay courts of Monte Carlo, Monaco, with the fourth seed hot favourite team crashing out at the hands of their underdog opponents. Currently holding the number sixth spot in the 2012 ATP Doubles
Team Rankings, Fyrstenberg and Matkowski failed to put up a decent show on Thursday. They face Mayer and Melzer for the first time in their professional careers and were stunned by a brilliant display of pin-point hitting from them. The Pole competitors bettered
their opponents in some segments of the game but missed out some crucial opportunities in the match to finish on the losing side inn the end.
Fyrstenberg and Matkowski had a below par serve precision of just 47 per cent in the match but they dropped merely six points on the first serve, bagging 22 out of 28. Mayer and Melzer, on the other hand, had a better serve share
of 63 per cent and won 24 out of 32 first serve points in the match to come out as the winners. They had nine break opportunities but only four conversions proved sufficient for the unseeded duo to wrap up the emphatic victory in style.
The fourth seeded Pole competitors utterly failed to register a single break point in the opening set of the match, while dropping their own serve in the fifth game to fall on the back foot early. Mayer and Melzer kept their lead
in-tact and finished off the first set at 6-4.
A much competitive second set was witnessed, with Fyrstenberg and Matkowski struggling hard to make a comeback in the match. The fourth seeded Poles registered two break points in the set but three cracking serve breaks from the
unseeded opponents drove them out of the competition in the end.
