Mayor moving towards public discussion with City Hall to solve Edmonton Oilers woes -NHL Update
Following the public apology by Edmonton Oilers owner, Daryl Katz, over rumours of him visiting Seattle to look at a potential new home for the Canadian based club over the weekend, Edmonton city mayor, Stephen Mandel, is now working towards arranging a public discussion in city hall to solve the franchises issues.
Fans of the Oilers came out immediately, as did players, to strongly condemn any such plans of relocating the team down South to the United States and rejected the idea as much as they could, forcing authorities in the National Hockey League (NHL) and city wise, to take immediate action.
Katz, humbly came out with a letter which was placed on major newspapers and online, apologizing to fans and stakeholders in the team for any distress that it may have caused him, by saying, “I took for granted your support and your love of the Oilers.”
“What’s important is on the 17th for Katz and his team to come to city council to go over a way in which we can do an acceptable deal for all people,” Mandel said. “That’s really what I’m concerned about.”
One thing is for sure now that Katz and the ownership group of the franchise are willing to stay in the city that has supported them tremendously up until this time, but working on a quick solution is the need of the time due to the agitating situation.
“That’s what I mean by a positive development. But, and there is a but, this just opens the door for the next conversation we still need to have, which is what does the Katz Group want and what’s their justification? That needs to happen,” Coun. Don Iveson said.
Many analysts term the move to potentially move the Edmonton Oilers to make the city realise of the monumental loss which could have come about if that were to occur, and now, the authorities are finally beginning to think about solving it as soon as possible.
Updates and developments should be expected in the upcoming days about the city of Edmonton discussing on how a new stadium could come into existence and when.
