Mays Gold lands Ladbrokes Spring Festival 630 at Monmore
Mays Gold surprised everyone by sealing an emphatic win in the final of Ladbrokes Spring Festival 630, held at Monmore on Friday, March 23, 2012. The venue hosted many high profile competitions, but the 630 metres heat was certainly the most exciting one.
C. Price’s black dog picked up an early pace to put his mighty rivals under pressure. Soon in command, the Jan-09 son of Droopys Vieri maintained high speed to keep his dominance all the way through.
Third Intention and Bowtime Joey tried hard to get close, but the champion runner was never in their reach. After gaining decent lead at the first bend, he stayed in command till the end.
With the odds of 5 to 1, he commenced proceedings from the sixth trap. Beating Third Intention by 1¾ lengths, the black hound clocked the area in just 38.37 seconds.
It would have been a disappointing outcome for the connections of Bowtime Joey. The black dog was declared 7-4 favourite ahead of the race. S. Mason’s trainee ended up third by ½ of a length.
On his hound’s thrilling triumph, Price said:
“That was only his second race for us over the distance, although he did have a couple of goes over 750 yards in Ireland when he didn’t seem to stay. He was off two or three months when we first got him with quite a few niggles, but he’s been getting fitter
and fitter recently and did ever so well to make the Arc final.
“That gave us the chance to try him over six bends although, with his early, I was really expecting him to lead from the off. He deserves a bit of a rest now and there aren’t really any plans,” he added.
Earlier in the card, Ladbrokes Spring Festival b*****s 480 saw Mutual Decision topping the chart by 4¾ lengths. The 5-4 favourite b***h stopped the clock in 28.16 seconds, beating Ballymac Eugenie comprehensively.
Fire Food Chili clinched a close win in the Ladbrokes Spring Festival Dog 416. The 7-4 favourite defeated Black Silver by a short head distance, winning £1000.
Another big contest was final of the Ladbrokes Spring Festival Dogs 480. The £1000 heat was dominated by Graigues Orchard, who outsmarted the 11-10 favourite Local Dee Jay by four lengths.
