Mays Gold upsets Brave the Times to take victory in the Stadium Bookmakers Standard Trophy
Mays Gold took a comprehensive victory in the 500 metres, Grade OR Stadium Bookmakers Standard Trophy at Nottingham on Monday, January 16, 2012. The cash prize for winning the event was £200.
Mays Gold was not the favourite for this race, as his previous couple of performances were not up to mark.
He had entered his previous race in Nottingham as one of the joint favourites, but fell 0.08 seconds adrift of the race winner.
The C Price trained dog did not disappoint his fans this time around, as he ended on top of the table with a splendid time of 30.94 seconds. He was the only one to clock a time inside the 30 seconds barrier.
The triumphant greyhound had a starting price of 6 to 4, and he had entered the race from trap number six. He is the son of Droopys Vieri out of Mays Gray and was born in January 2009.
Second place went to Brave the Times, trained by D J Atkins.
The bettors would have put a lot of money on him, but he only managed to finish the race in 31.24 seconds, 0.30 adrift of the winner, in with a starting price of 5 to 4.
Brave the Times popped out from trap number four and showed good speed initially.
However, he was unable to carry on the momentum and could only manage a second place finish. He was born in August 2009, and he is the son of Head Bound out of Brave Pony.
There was a close competition between the third and fourth placed hounds, as they were separated by a head’s distance.
Bower Model completed the distance in 31.56 seconds after breaking in from trap number three. She had a starting price of 6 to 1, and is trained by P J Rosney. She is the daughter of Rumble Impact-Bower Naomi and was born in June 2009.
Just a head’s distance short, Farloe Lenson completed the race in 31.58 seconds. He is trained by R J Thompson, and was born in December 2008 to Westmead Joe, out of Farloe Edge.
The last two places were taken by Ontheoneroad and Rith Agus Rumble, who completed the race distance in 31.68 and 31.78 seconds, respectively.
They were no way near the front runners and need a lot more speed to win in future races.
Overall, the race turned out to be a good one. Mays Gold, despite not being the favourite, would have had the confidence of the bettors, as he has done well in past races, and might get better odds in future.
