Mayweather OVERRATED??

Is Floyd Mayweather jr. Overrated?? I really think he is. I think he is NOT as good as people paint him to be. What has he done in the welterweight division??

De La Hoya proved to me that he still has what it takes to beat the "P4P" boxer of the world. I know that Forbes is not an amazing fighter, but he stepped in the ring to win, he showed great boxing skills and technique. Oscar did not fade and if he uses his jab, he WILL beat Mayweather.

If DLH happens to beat Mayweather with a clear decision, what will you say about Floyd?

  1. all the best eventually get beat,so will floyd.i think oscar in his prime would beat floyd in his prime but probably will fall short in the rematch but is still capable beat floyd if he fights the right fight. i think floyd may be the obvious choice to label as the best pound for pound today but really shouldnt be considered as the true welterweight champion ,hes not fighting welterweight contenders and defending his title.. Somewhere out there ,maybe de la hoya or cotto or someone we are not expecting,is a fighter who will beat mayweather.

  2. Yes. I don't think he should be considered the P4P with his fight selection and style of fighting.

  3. I won't call Mayweather overrated, because of something that he hasnt done much of in one division. I agree that he hasn't done much at 147, at least against true welterweights, but it doesn't change what he has already done in divisions before moving to 147. I do feel that he should fight and beat more natural welterweights, if he wants to convince me that he is absolutely the greatest of all-time...... or deserving of being mention in the top ten.

  4. I believe, for the most part, you are correct. I haven't seen him unify any of the weight classes he's been in. It seems he's fought one or two and then jumps to the next big payday, which will say a lot about his "legacy" in the future. The great fighters of the past dominated and cleaned house to leave no doubt about who the champion was in their particular weight class. Floyd on the other hand has never done that.  Imagine if Sugar Ray had never fought Duran ? The one guy who he lost to and then beat him in a rematch. What would be said about Sugar Ray then ? Sugar fought everyone there was to fight. His legacy is cemented. Floyd on the other hand is still up in the air.

Now, I do believe that Floyd will adjust and defeat Oscar easily this time around. The slower, smaller and weaker, compared to Floyd, Forbes was not a "great" test for Oscar. It was trivial at best and misguided at worst, if people try to use this as a gauge against Floyd. Oscar was hit entirely too much from a presumably smaller and slower version of Floyd. They both, PBF and Oscar, don't have the pop to KO each other so we'll have a drawn out 2nd fight. The rematch will be a waste of our money for an outcome that is predictable.

  5. I think Floyd is overrated by some people. Some people are saying he is the best p4p of all time, thats a bit of a giant step when his career is not yet over.

Floyd is certainly the p4p right now, but that spot is very steadily going towards Cotto. Mayweather ko'ed a smaller Ricky Hatton, A points win over Oscar who showed he could have beaten Floyd, but he abandoned his jab and seemed as though he didn't want to win, probably because he knows the rematch would make Millions.

Mayweather will be overrated until he is pushed to the limit and see what kind of grit he has. I heard it said that a fighter who can lose a fight and then come back to win the rematch sais more then a fighter who never lost. I tend to believe this.

Is Floyd picking opponents he knows he can beat? Or is Floyd so great that he makes everyone else look average. The answer is probably a little of both.

If Mayweather wanst to be considered even the best p4p of the new millennium then he has to pass through Cotto. Cotto is young and so is Mayweather, there is no reason this fight shouldn't happen....Unless Mayweather is scared to fight him. (I think he is)

So is Floyd Mayweather overrated? We wont know till his career is over.

But one thing is for sure, he is one of the most gifted boxers ive seen. Lets find out what hes got for heart.

  6. overated lets think about this.he has beaten jesus chavez twice by ko,diego corallis by ko,arturo gatti by ko,ricky hatton by ko,sharmba mitchell by ko,has won decisions over zab judah, jose luis castillo twice, carlos baldimor, oscar  de la hoya, and demarcus corley.does that sound overated to you.i call it a brilliant career.all the guys he has beaten were champs many were undeafeted when they lost to him and as far as the future.oscar was coming off a big win the last time over  recardo mayorga.he won that by ko.he trained hard he prepared for the fight hard and then he lost to the undeafeted welterweight champion floyd mayweather jr.so is he  overated I say no.

  7. Not overrated really.  The guy's very talented and athletically gifted.  The problem is he's got no good competition in his time that it's pretty hard to measure his greatness against legendary welters like Ray Leonard, Duran, Hearns and Benitez, all great fighters who fought and made each other great.

  8. At 35, there is no way Oscar can improve on his previous performance, most likely he'll be a little more deteriorated.  Look for Del Annoya to run out of gas earlier and watch Floyd win it going away.

  9. Sorry sir but DLH will lose big in the rematch. Did you notice what I noticed about delahoya in the forbes fight. Should I tell you or did you notice the differnce between the freddy roach oscar and the floyd mayweather sr. oscar. If you noticed you wouldnt be saying this man!!!!! Mayweather will stomp a mud hole in a faster but weak oscar. oscar is working on beating mayweather to the punch because he knows he cant knock him out. So a weaker oscar will be more open to getting hit because he will lack punching power to keep mayweather jr. off of him. Wait and see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. at 154 oscar looked huge and strong and his punching power was scary. at a smaller weight oscar doesnt look so good a swells in his face  a lot more. he should have took this match at 154 again. now he has to fight at mayweather jr.s weight which is a mistake.

  10. No he wont.  De la Hoya is just in it for the money he doesn't even do it for the sport anymore like he used to.  He proved it against forbes who didn't even win the contender, he wasn't even in the top of the contendor fighters.  Floyed mayweather i Really defensive like in the last fight over De La Hoya he protected himself and attaked when he needed to.  De La Hoya couldn't touch mayweather he tried to hit the body and mayweather still blocked most of those.  Im Mexican and found it amuzing when he came out last 5 de mayo in the mirachi suit.  He Can't beat Mayweather But i think a miguel Cotto can.

  11. Mayweather overrated? h**l NO!

  12. I don't think he is overrated but I do think his career is way overrated...He has the skills to beat any fighter but he won't fight the best nothing but washed up fighters. Oscar probably the best he has fought but that fight was a dud both fighters were boring and did nothing...Mayweathers career is a lame list of no names...

  13. Maybe, but its not his fault not a lot of great fighters this past two years.

  14. If Oscar defeats Floyd, I would say that Floyd was beaten by one of the few fighters that could have did it. I wouldn't take anything from Floyd. Why? A loss wouldn't take away from his previous accomplishments in the ring. History has proven that the best of the best have suffered a set back at least once. There is always someone who has your number and will clean your clock.

No. I don't think that Floyd is overrated. He's fought just about everyone that has challenged him and won, although some weren't impressive victories, but still a victory. It's amazing when an athlete comes along and is the real deal how the media/critics seek to find and/or manufacture chinks in his/her armour to discredit them. If you're good you're good, if you're great you're great - - period. Gerry Cooney was overrated!! Holmes exposed that truth. Yes Floyd is an arrogant loud mouth, but he is backing up every word at every weight division he's stepped into.

I happen to feel that if he wins the rematch against Dela-Hoya that he should fight Cotto. I think that Cotto would pose more of a threat to Mayweather than anyone else right now. I also give credit where credit is due. Cotto is a BEAST and would give Floyd trouble!

  15. Only at welterweight.  At 140 and below Floyd is d**n near flawless and truly boxing's P4P best.  At 147 Floyd is out of his comfort zone and lacks the power he had at the lower weights.  He is still competitive at 147 but appears very hesitant to risk his undefeated record against a legitimate welterweight contender.  Mayweather needs a couple fights with guys like Clottey, Margarito, Cotto, Quintana or Williams before he gains the respect at welterweight he clearly earned at the lower weights.  DeLa Hoya might just beat Floyd, he almost did the first time, then for some reason quit jabbing.  A loss to DeLa Hoya at welterweight will prove Floyd isn't a true Welterweight, but odds are good that won't happen, Oscar is well past his prime and too slow to really catch Floyd.

  16. Hello Andrew!  Awesome Q!  I think the guy is not overrated I think he is a real good boxer and maybe better than he really think he is!

I compare him, if anyone to Sugar Ray Leonard. The only difference between them I think,  is the same reason why fans like you and me doubt about his potential meaning Sugar did not avoided any fights that I know of!  Floyd has been a real smart fighter when it comes to facing his opponents, he waits for right timing and he is not a real risk taker.  I would love to have seen him fight Margarito when Margarito was undefeated, that could have brought some poof about his position in the world of boxing.  We have to see if he plays Cotto the same way he played Margarito, that would defenetly

brings more doubts, and be really disappointing to boxing fans.

I think he is a great boxer, but Floyd has to face the real champs out there to claim that he is the best , for me he is not reached that point. In perspective, Hopkins proved that he was a better Champ that Mayweather has been, he proved it until his age betrayed him.  We respect him for that and he will have his position in boxing history for what he did.

  17. he aint overated just cause he hasnt faught any good welters . hes hada good accomplishment. and people who say oscar got hit to many times by steave forbes means floyd will hit him even more are wrong!!  floyd aint aggrasive he dont take much risk . he didnt take much risk inthe fisrt fight what makes u think his gonna start swinging in the second fight.
