Mayweather Sr. picks Pacquiao over Margarito
The charismatic, boxing-savvy father of Floyd Mayweather Jr. has said that the upcoming November 13 bout between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito is going to be a "good" fight, but that Pacquiao will win.
Mayweather Sr. made the comment after expressing his opinion that both fighters are “crooks,” and that in this way, the fight is made in heaven.
“In my honest opinion, they can both fight each other because they’re both, to me in my mind, crooks. So they can fight each other and beat each other up all they want to, because one is no better than the other one,” Mayweather said in an exclusive interview with On the Ropes Boxing Radio.
He continued, “Everybody’s doing something dirty. That’s what I feel and believe. To me, in my opinion, one is no dirtier than the other one. So it’s a good fight. […] Whatever’s happening, I’m looking at it the way my mind tells me it is. That’s the way I’m looking at it. I’m looking at it the real way. Pacquiao is probably going to end up beating Margarito.”
Mayweather Sr. and his son, widely regarded the No.2 pound-for-pound boxer in the world, believes that Manny Pacquiao, the No.1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world, is taking performance-enhancing drugs. Pacquiao has claimed seven championship titles from as many divisions.
Antonio Margarito was banned from boxing last year when it was discovered he had an illegal substance in his hand wraps prior to a fight with “Sugar” Shane Mosley.
Mayweather confirmed he thinks Pacquiao will win after the smaller fighter has demonstrably demolished bigger opposition, such as Miguel Cotto and Oscar de la Hoya. Pacquiao is 5’6’’and faces his tallest opponent in 5’11’’ Margarito.
Apart from predicting the Pacquiao-Margarito bout, Mayweather said that in a match between the Philippine congressman and his son, Mayweather Jr. would “whoop his a*s.” He stated his rationale, “If you ain’t got no defense, defense wins fights. That’s what you win fights with, defense. That’s what you win football with, defense. That’s what you win basketball with, defense. That’s what you win checkers with, defense. There are so many other games that you play, baseball, all of those games, any game that you play, defense wins,” Mayweather claimed. His son is noted for his exceptional ability to slip and avoid punches, a quality that isn’t emphasized for Pacquiao.
