Mayweather believes Pacquiao was close to death – Boxing News
Manny Pacquiao’s knockout loss at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez past Saturday was not just shocking for his fans and family, but even his rivals who never expected the Pac-man to fall prey to Marquez’s right counter punch. It was a moment of awe for the
boxing universe, as it saw one of the best fighters of today fall unconscious to the mat and motionless for several seconds.
Floyd Mayweather Jr., the current WBC welterweight titlist, spoke to fighthype.com regarding Pacquiao’s loss, asserting that the Filipino was brutally knocked out and he was close to death.
“When a guy gets knocked out and he can get up, and they sit him on his stool, they rub his back, he go home and ice himself, he go to the hospital and get checked out and he's OK, that's one thing,” said Mayweather. “But when you got to wake a guy up with
smelling salts and he got a concussion and he gotta go to the hospital overnight, that's crucial. That's close to the death.”
Mayweather has always found himself against Pacquiao for the last eight years. The unbeaten American fighter thinks Pacquiao has used his name to build a reputation. However, this time, Mayweather was much softer towards Pacquiao, offering words of solace
to him and his family.
“I'm not here to talk bad about Pacquiao. I feel bad for him, honestly, I really feel bad for him,” he said.
“Hopefully, he's OK. My prayers go out to the Pacquiao family. I know he loves the sport of boxing.”
Mayweather also spoke of Pacquiao’s political and religious commitments, asserting that the sport of boxing needs 100 percent dedication but Pacquiao has remained distracted recently. Not just Mayweather, even Pacquiao’s allies believe the former WBO welterweight
titlist is being distracted by his commitments.
Pacquiao still stands as an icon for his countrymen, even though he was knocked out brutally. In the last decade, the Pac-man phenomenon has ruled the world of boxing. He has been the most explosive and daring fighter of the decade, a lot more than Mayweather
who is known for his defensive techniques.
