Mayweather speaks out about his self-exile mode – Boxing News
Floyd Mayweather, the current WBC welterweight champion, spoke about his two-year self-exile from boxing. According to Mayweather, he felt good staying completely out of touch from the sport. Mayweather revealed about his hibernation during HBO’s ‘Floyd
Mayweather Speaking Out’.
The four episode program is part of HBO’s marketing campaign for Mayweather’s upcoming mega bout against Miguel Cotto on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
When asked about his exile during the show, Mayweather iterated, “It just feels good not to buy no boxing magazines, not to watch no fights, just do regular activities. I enjoy spending time with my family, going bowling, going to the movies, going to see
shows on the strip, in Miami hanging on the beach, going to different countries, doing different things outside of boxing. I just needed a break from the sport. At that time, I don't think I really missed the sport, but I know what it was – with me, everything
I did was boxing. It started from the beginning. I watched boxing every Saturday, every Friday, every Tuesday.”
He added that his whole life back then was boxing and boxing and nothing else and that is how it has been for the last 20 years. Mayweather, who is 35, said he needed a break and some peace in life and so he went out for 2 years.
Floyd Mayweather jr. is scheduled to face Miguel Cotto and the fight is just ten days away. Miguel Cotto will be defending his title while Mayweather will be defending his undefeated streak.
Mayweather, who speaks of fighting at least five opponents, in his previous interviews has clearly indicated that he is on the verge of retiring. In addition, he wants to fight the Filipino WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao before he hangs his gloves.
Both the fighters are considered the best boxers of today and their super-fight is highly awaited. According to Bob Arum, Manny Pacquiao’s promoter, both the pugilists will not clash this year but probably in 2013, they will have the match. Fans are eagerly
waiting for both the boxers to clash and if it happens, it will be the biggest match of the century.
