Question:

Mayweather vs. Cotto thoughts?

What do you think? I think Cotto would win because he has a great jab and a great offensive game, and he would pursue mayweather, something that mayweather would not like at all, and not adapt to. Thoughts. Comments. Speculation. Welcome.

  1. FLOYD WINS BY KO or STOPPAGE AND HERE'ES WHY.

in COTTO vs TORRES: cotto was hurt bad early on, he was dazed and stumbling all over the place because he was getting caught by punches that were'nt even fast, they were haymakers that you could see from a mile away but cotto has poor defense and refuses to back up until its too late. had torres thrown any body punches when cotto was hurt he would have stopped him.

in COTTO vs MALIGNAGGI: we saw what happens when cotto faces speed....he gets hit and alot, luckily for him Malignaggi has absolutely no power and he also hurt his hand or shoulder during the fight. cotto deserved the decision but it was glimpse of cotto vs mayweather and floyd hits harder, has better defense, and footwork than malignaggi

in COTTO vs JUDAH: judah dominated the fight until he ran out of steam like he always does, he had cotto hurt a few times with vicious uppercuts. this was another glimpse into the future of mayweather vs cotto since zab and floyd has similar attributes, and zab looked phenomenal against cotto til he got tired. floyd doesn't know the meanting of tired.

in COTTO vs CORLEY: please everyone watch this fight if you can i feel really bad for "chop chop" who had a solid chance at winning this fight but was robbed by an in-experienced referee. the fight was stopped when cotto threw a 3punch combo that missed, sensing danger he took a knee like a smart veteran fighter would to recieve a standing 8 count to get his bearings thats when the ref stopped it, everyone was shocked even the commentators called this a unfounded foolish stoppage. the fight was pretty even and chop chop was getting the upper hand at the stoppage.

Floyd beat guys that are faster than cotto, just as strong as cotto, more agressive than cotto, throw more combinations than cotto, bigger than cotto, and that are smarter fighters than cotto. Floyd would would pot shot cotto til he is damaged, cotto would be missing with all his puches due to floyd's footwork and ring savvy and he'd get frustrated like he did when he picked up another fighter and threw him out of frustration. floyd would then began staying inside to break cotto's spirit even more. not the ref but cotto's corner would stop the fight seeing the one-sidedness of the fight and the un-answered punishment he is taking just like in Mayweather vs Gatti. whenever floyd fights aggressive strong fighters like gatti or hatton he beats them even worst than fast, smart, fighters like de la hoya or zab judah.

  2. Mayweather kicks his butt as always... he rises to the challange...I dont like him, but pleaz someone prove me wrong.

  3. You do realize what you've just said is exactly the same thing that the Ricky Hatton fans said.  There was no way Mayweather could handle Hatton's body attack.

Not only did Mayweather adapt to Hatton, he didn't even need a round or two to figure him out.  Adapted immediately.

As it stands right now, Cotto's hands are not fast enough to overwhelm Floyd Mayweather.  Floyd would overwhelm Cotto by machine-gunning him with combos and force a surprisingly early stoppage.  Cotto fans need to think about what they wish for...and be glad to wait until Mayweather is 35 and starts to slow down to have a chance.

  4. you are exactly right that is the same reason i belive that cotto will beat mayweather.  Mayweathers last fight have been good but the two things that hatton and del al hoya did were apply pressure in their own ways,  de la hoya did it good by using the jab to get in then hammering him away on the ropes.  HAtton was faster and used his speed but mayeather piked him off b/c haton only landed 11 jabs in 10 rounds.  Cottos jab is the best in the welterweight division, he outboxed mosley with it, and can set up his left hook with it.  De la hoya did his gameplan in the beginning but then left it and was getting piked off.  Cotto will use his jab, not give up, and attack floyds body.  I say cotto by UD or late round TKO, this fight would be the biggest fight that boxing can make, the scene would be great with the puerto rican fans and americans.  All the mayweather haters and lovers.  The celebs like denzel, wesley snipes, brad pitt, mark cuban, and newton, along with puerto rican stars like sammy sosa who was there at cottos fight.  But before cotto can fight mayweather, cotto has to beat antonio margarito and what a h**l of a fight that will be on july 26th i guarantee now that it will be the fight of the year!Great quiestion!

  5. Please, you can't compare Hatton with Cotto. That is ridiculous! Hatton doesn't have the power and the consistent jab to keep up. Plus, he's too small. DLH gave Floyd a run for his money because he used the jab early but then abandoned it. As far as great fighter's Floyd has fought they are listed here in this paragraph. An over the hiller and a wee little man. Oh and Castillo who "beat" him the first time. Here are your reasons why Cotto would beat Floyd:

    1. Cotto's "jab" is actually a power straight left. He is a natural south paw and he doesn't just flick a jab he throws it with pop. The likes of which Floyd has never seen in a consistent basis.

    2. Cotto is patient and has no wasted movements. Look at his connect rate with any fighter!

    3. His body punching is more than Floyd could ever handle and it would definitely slow Floyd down considerably.

    4. Floyd doesn't have the power to KO him! I'm sorry if he couldn't KO Mitchell, Baldomir, DLH, or Corley there is no way on God's green earth he's going to KO Cotto.

    5. The double left hook. Floyd's natural movement, as any boxing fan knows, is circling to his right! Right into Cotto's lefts.

I don't hate Floyd by any means I just want to see those two get it on. Win or Lose!

Cotto by TKO over Floyd no question.

  6. every year is the same song "oh...Mayweather has never faced someone like zab judah" or "oh mayweather has never faced someone like castillo" or "oh Mayweather has never faced someone like gatti" or "oh Mayweather has never faced someone like Corrales" or "oh Mayweather has never faced some like hatton" or "oh Mayweather has never faced someone like de La Hoya", it seems like every year there is a new fighter that Maywetaher has never faced, every year there is a fighter that would "beat" Mayweather,i think people just want to see him lose and jump on the band wagon of whoever seems to be winning in that particual time frame i bet If Mayweather beats cotto people will start making excuses like "Cotto was too young" or the "ref was not good" or "cotto won the fight,he was robbed (even though mayweather clealry out boxes him)" people seem to forget that this guy is not even a natural welter weight and yet he manages to hang in there with much bigger and stronger fighters and still wins....Cotto is just the current trend, he is not skilled enough to beat meyweather, he is not the first body puncher that Mayweather has faced, he is not the first pressure fighter that mayweather has faced,he is not the first hard hitter that Mayweather has faced, yet people talk about him as if he is some sort of boxing messiah with magical powers, the truth is, Cotto does not have anything in particular that mayweather has not dealt with in the ring before, sure he has a lot of heart but Mayweather is ten times smarter than cotto in the ring and is sleek enough to handle cotto's flurries......honestly I am tired of always having to read these comments, because it seems that no matter how many people Mayweather beats , there will always be some fighter somewhere that Mayweather has "never faced".

  7. why do you even ask question???we all know mayweather avoids the young lions that are in there prime...mayweather would rather fight cherrypicked fights against bums and over the hill promoters...only suckers will pay 2 see this gawearther dance with de la homo!

  8. thumbs up to ericktravel and elmer fudd , people have been saying the same thing about every guy Mayweather faced, i think in the end mayweather's speen and experience will help him win against cotto.

  9. Fudd is correct in saying that this is what the Hatton fans said, BUT I think Cotto would KO Hatton in 5 rounds or less.  Cotto is far more accomplished than Hatton, and the comparison is not fair to Cotto.

However, I would favor Mayweather against Cotto, as Mayweather has fought the better competition.  At 147 May has been less impressive than he was at 140 (barely getting by ODLH, and fighting a bloated Hatton both at 147).

Despite that, I think May beats Cotto, but barely.

  10. i think cotto has a great jab and that's what was working when mayweather fought de la hoya, so if Miguel unlike delahoya keep throwing his jab he MIGHT have a chase....also cotto has to chase mayweather cause the guy runs a runs around the ring like a *****, which is smart and has worked for him but it makes a crappy fight and boxing fans mad....

  11. yeah he will never face Cotto cause of the ***** he is..."I will never let the sport of bxing retire me"...The question was will he face Cotto...So that being he pretty much said Cotto would retire him and he is not gonna take a beaten from him...Cotto late KO or an obvious UD.....Gayweather is a scared *****..

  12. He (Miguel Cotto) is the only real threat in this division for Floyd.

A few years ago Margarito was the big threat for him but Mayweather managed (in a very smart move)not to risk it against him. Now he is going downhill (Margarito), and he should be totally out of the picture after he fights Miguel Cotto in a mandatory bout after what happened this weekend.

So, who ever wins in the Cotto-Margarito fight is going to fight against Floyd and he has no where to run after that.  As a note; Margarito called out Mayweather in various occasions to set up a date to fight and he never gave it to him, Cotto in the other hand has always been waiting for the moment of tittle unification in this weight class, so hopefully he will win against Margarito as expected and have his great opportunity against Floyd.

I am big boxing follower as most of us here, but in my almost 25 yrs of watching boxing, I think the Cotto vs Mayweather fight would be as similar to the great Roberto "Mano de Piedra" Duran vs Sugar Ray Leonard in the 80's.  The best Hispanic puncher against the great skillful boxer that was Leonard.  If you well remember, Duran won the first one, but then Duran was totally outboxed by Sugar in the second one.

So my call is that if Mayweather goes technical on him he should win by descision. If he descides to fight him he will most defenetly loose by TKO.

  13. mayweather would win it but cotto is good
