Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Can 50 Cents make the impossible possible? – Boxing Special
By now, boxing fans have understood that a super-bout between WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather and former WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is impossible. However, the recent tidings that have emerged lately are suggesting that the showdown
might just happen this year or next year.
Floyd Mayweather jr. was released from a Las Vegas jail earlier today, Friday. The unbeaten American stayed under detention for two months. One month of his jail time was shredded considering his good behaviour in jail. Now, the WBC champion will probably
find a suitable opponent to defend his title soon.
Last month, rapper, and friend of Mayweather, revealed that he would be the main promoter of Mayweather’s TMT Promotions. It is not sure yet whether Mayweather will be promoted by the association or not, but other fighters have definitely signed up for it.
Hall of Famer promoter Bob Arum, who promotes Filipino Manny Pacquiao, believes 50 Cents’ inclusion in the gang will make things better between the two camps. Arum is hopeful that 50 Cents will improve relationships and might make the super-bout happen.
“I would think that if [50 Cent] promoted Floyd, then it would make a match-up between Pacquiao and Mayweather that much easier,” said Arum in his recent interview to Ringtv.com.
He added, “You would have somebody that is a friend and a mentor that he can rely on and they would protect his interests in any kind of promotion, and I would be on the side of Pacquiao.”
Things have been quite bumpy between both the camps. Earlier this year, after believing that Bob Arum is trying to avoid the showdown, Floyd Mayweather made the effort of talking to Pacquiao himself.
Mayweather offered Pacquiao $40 million flat while suggesting that he would keep the entire pay-per-view proceedings. The offer was rejected by Pacquiao and was countered by a similar offer of the winner keeping the entire pay-per-view proceedings while
the loser will get the flat fee. Mayweather did not succumb to Pacquiao’s idea and the entire build up fell apart.
According to Pacquiao, he was embarrassed by Mayweather’s offer, as he thinks he deserves the same that Mayweather does. On the other hand, Mayweather believes he is a bigger star and therefore he has the right to earn more than Pacquiao if the showdown
ever happens.
The entire idea of Mayweather fighting Pacquiao has been on the table since the last two years, but nothing has been achieved yet. Fans are eager to watch both the fighters lock horns with each other but it seems like their dreams would be shattered again
and again.
Mayweather’s last fight was against Miguel Cotto, which he won but he showed signs of aging. Similarly, Pacquiao locked horns with Timothy Bradley on June 9 this year and lost his WBO title via controversial split decision. Even Pacquiao has gone slow with
his movements and he wants to retire as soon as possible.
Considering the fact that both fighters are nearly at the end of their careers, fans and promoters are hoping for them to settle down for a deal. If the showdown cannot happen now, it will never happen.
A bout between Mayweather and Pacquiao would Ali vs. Tyson of today, only if it happens. If not, then boxing fans would have to settle down for yet another unsorted pair of fighters who never could decide who the best one is.
