My Mazda 2003 Protege 5 car got the "engine check" light on recently. After checked from car shop, a mechanic told me that my car has to replace the Oxygen Sensor component because P003 Oxygen Sensor Bank 1 message came out. I want to replace the component by myself to save money. Could someone tell me where the exact Oxygen Sensor is in my car? What does P003 means? Is the Oxygen Sensor bank 1 before catalyic or after?

  1. If you really want to replace the 02 sensor that gentelman is right the sensor will be before the cat converter and and don't use after market sensors buy the right one and shop around for it and a shop around for a shop to install it for you bec prices do vary so much now a days and some might change it for 10 to 20 bucks and others want 50 bucks just in labour a lone.

    Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way those front 02 sensors can be a real pain to get at and they really do call for someone well use to replacing them.

  2. It means that the Oxygen Sensor is no longer performing up to specifications.

    P0030 = HO2S Heater Control Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

    Basically inside each oxygen sensor is a heater circuit so that the sensor can get up to operating temperatures faster and keep your gas mileage up.

    This specific oxygen sensor will be before the catalytic converter and closer to the engine. It will be right in the exhaust pipe with a wire trailing out of it and a connector you will have to disconnect before you can attempt to take it out of the pipe.

    I would not suggest doing this yourself because very often they will be very hard to come out or not want to come out at all. A certified repair shop will have everything they need in case that problem appears.

    Hope you luck and I hope this answered all of your questions.
