Mbulaeni Mulaudzi out of CWG due to hamstring injury
Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the 800m, is the latest athlete to drop out of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The South African 800m runner has withdrawn from the Games because due to a hamstring injury, and not because of fears
for his health and safety.
CEO of the South African Sports Confederation of Olympic Committee, Tubby Reddy, has stated that no athlete will be allowed to withdraw from the Games unless they have an injury. If they claim an injury, they will be examined by doctors to confirm the truth
of the claim.
Mulaudzi would have been in a good position to win a gold medal in Delhi after 800m world record holder, David Rudisha of Kenya, announced his pullout weeks ago.
Along with silver in the 2004 Olympics, Mulaudzi won gold at the 2009 World Championships and the 2004 World Indoor Championships.
Already, many high profile athletes have withdrawn from the Games. Mo Farah of England, Janeth Jepkosgei of Kenya, and Usain Bolt of Jamaica will all miss the Games due to injury or fatigue.
Concerns about the condition of the athlete’s village, ranging from leaky toilets to poisonous snakes, and health concerns such as dengue fever and malaria, have prompted the withdrawal of other athletes.
Australian discus champion, Dani Samuels, pulled herself out of the Games after two tourists were shot by gunmen on a motorcycle, and world champion British cyclist, Geraint Thomas, also pulled out because of concerns due to his health and security.
South Africa’s team now only has 11 members, including Caster Semenya, whose attendance is questionable because of a back injury. She is hoping to be cleared to run by doctors before her first scheduled race next Wednesday.
If Semenya is unable to participate in the Games, it will be a huge blow to South Africa’s chances of winning a gold medal.
The Games are scheduled to start on October 3.
