He probably wasn't shot down.

That was the fifth aircraft he crashed.

He was off course and out of sight, which is why he was just listed as MIA until the propaganda tapes he made for the Communists started being played in Cuba.

There are very compelling reasons he refuses to release his military records, none of which have to do with national security.
